Dr hj. Boxer, of Hastings, has been appointed acting president of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association, in succession to Mr James D. Harper, who has accepted a seat on the War Pensions Board. Dr Boxer left New Zealand with the main body, took part in the landing at Galhpoli, and was invalided.in Auqus£ 19x5. On his return to New Zealand he was discharged as unlit for further service. A Waiinato Press Association message states that Mr W. H. Baskett, a prominent citizen, died on Sunday, aged 78 years. He was a justico of the peace, honorary life member of the A. and P. Association, secretary of the High School Board, and secretary of the Technical Association. He had been ill for some weeks. Cabinet yesterday appointed Mr Guy Morris Resident Commissioner at Nieue Mr Morris served with the New Zealand Forces in France, and returned wounded. . The members of the inside and outside staffs of the Government Insurance Office met in the manager's room yesterday afternoon to say good-bye and* make a, small presentation to Mr L. M. Morrison, who has enlisted in tho Expeditionary Force and will be leaving shortly to 'go into camp. Mr Allison, the district manager, in a few well-chosen remarks, alluded to the good feeling which had always existed between Mr Morrison and the members of the staff, and wished him every success and a safe return at the conclusion of the war. Mr Pinel, chief clerk, endorsed these remarks, and testified to the cordial relationship that had always existed between them ever since Mr Morrison had been transferred to Dunedin. Tho members of the outside staff also bore testimony to tho assistance which had at all times been given to them by Mr Morrison. The present consisted of a wristlet watch suitably inscribed and a money belt. Mr P., 0. Barnett, of the Wellington head office staff, takes Mr Morrison's place in the Dunedin office. Mr and Mrs John Fuller, sen., reach Dunedin to-night. They will spond a few? days in this City, Lieutenant-colonel Sleeman came to Dunedin from the- north last night, and went on to Invercargill this morning, on inspection duty. Mr Harrison Jones is about to make a short business trip-to America. Dr H. K. Mill, Director of the British Rainfall Organisation, who visited New Zealand about five years ago, has been awarded the Symons'Gold Medal for 1918 by the Royal Meteorological Society for his work in connection with meteorological science. Mr Sadd (Chief Commissioner of Lands) and Mr Ritchie (chairman of the Land Purchase Board) left town to-day for Teviot to further inspect that estate.
