INGREDIENTS IN APPLES
WHAT THEY GIVE TO THE SYSTEM THAT IS HEALTHFUL. .Fruit, men use the slogan “An apple a day - keeps the doctor away,” and some have cried derision against the vegetable meu “An onion a day will keep everyone away,” but the first slogan contains more truth than fiction. In a recent article in ‘ Fruit and Farm,’ the various ingredients of an apple which are assimilated in the digestive processes are clearly . set forth. When you munch an apple, you are taking into your body gallic acid, which is one of the most necessary elements for the human body. You are eating sugar- in its most healthful form, combined with phosphorus in the only form in which it is available as a source of brain and nerve energy. You are eating a gum allied to the “'fragrant medicinal gums of Arabia.” You are drinking the purest water that Nature., can distil, and last, hut not least, you are eating the most healthful and desirable fiber that is obtainable. In feeding live stock as opposed to human beings, we call this roughage, and a good stock man realises the importance of abundant and healthful roughage. Although apple day has passed in, reality, like Christmas, its "spirit should be continued throughout the entire season of harvest and far into the winter. This' year we must eat 2,000,000 bushels of apples, which would ordinarily be taken across the water, and we must eat them in place of and not in addition to a great deal of other food
