ADULTERATED FLANNEL
DRAPERS FINED. | Ernest Love and Martin Pollard, trading as Love and Pollard, drapers, Sydney road, were prosecuted in the local court yesterday (says tho Melbourne 'Age' of December 8) for having exposed for sale a textile material containing wool and cotton to which a false trade description had been applied. It was stated that the material was labelled "natural flannel, heavy weight." Charles A. E. Price, public analyst, said the fabric contained 60.88.per cent, cotton. Questioned as to what constituted flannel, witness said the British Commissioner,- he understood, had consulted with the authorities, and it had bean decided that " flannel" was a material containing at least 90 per cent, of wool. Dr Cole, P.M. : This material has passed the Customs department as natural cotton and wool flannel. A fine of £5, with £1 Is costs, was imposed. Walter Pvuddick, draper, Sydney road, was similarly charged. The material in this case was described as " good flannel." It contained 54.6 per cent, of cotton. Defendant said such material had been sold for 20 years as flannel. He produced an invoice from a warehouse to show that it was classed as flannel. Dr Cole: According to the invoice it is classed and sold to the defendant as flannel. It seems as though the wrong pcop-b are being prosecuted. Why are proceedings not taken against the warehouses? Inspector Leckie : We have not had one of these invoices before. » A fine of £5, with £1 Is costs, was also imposed in this case. In the raso of Frederick A. Wilson, draper, I.ygon street, analysis proved that the material, labelled "flannel," contained 95.5 per cent, of cotton. Dr Cole: It is just flavored with flannel. (Laughter.) The fine in thk <-aso W as increased to £lO, with £1 Is costs.
