PROHIBITION IN CANADA

' A well-known ex-New Zealander, who during' has long residence in this country belonged to that section known as the "moderates," but who is":now domiciled in Canada, after acknowledging the receipt of a.file of tha 'Evening Star' containing our articles on -the six o'clock closing le/rislation and reports of the debates" thereon, •writes from Winnipeg under date November 19 as follows: "I have read with a great deal of in■terest tho 'Star's' articles ou tho Six o'Clook Closing question. In respect to tho drank problem, I do not think that vou in New Zealand can do better than follow in the footsteps of other and older countries, both as a measure of food conservation and on account of the traffic itself. Perhaps -you are aware that in the United States' the importation of liquor has been prohibited; as also has been its manufacture during the war. ■ In Canada, while this latter has not happened, it is spoken of, and it is only a matter of a very short time—probably weeks—when both the manufacture and the importation of spirituous liquors will also bo prohibited. Wo have, as you doubtless know, Prohibition operating in nearly every province in Urn •Dominion. We havo had it in Manitoba lor over 18 months now, and during that time I have not seen one case of drimkeuness. ■ Of course, there is a great deal of liquor consumed in spite of the new law but while tho manufacture is still allowed to go on that cannot be avoiled. I think tnera is no doubt that the last "18 months have proved that we aro far better off without it, and there is not tho slightest chance of the public-house coming back again. The Canadians would not listen to any demand for compensation, which was promptly ruled out."
