A HAPPY PRUSSIAN HOLIDAY
The ‘Vossische Zeitung ’ publishes an illuminating sketch of holiday life in a Silesian country hotel. The guests corns down to breakfast, which consists of “ two hot cups of nature-tea with saccharine and two slices of miserable war bread smeared with tlie comforting view of the mountains and a small quantity of colored stuff which ia said to answer to the name of marmalade.” Fluter four “beautiful and elegant women," followed by a Indy’s maid bearing a large cake, two sausages, and two boiled eggs for each of the party, and also “a quite real' and actual pound of butter.” There are mutterings of “ food hosa" and angry discoveries that the party have brought their own food from a neighboring country house. An elderly Prussian official bangs his fist upon the table and says i “Go and fetcl,\ the police. They ate eating tinea times their weekly rations. You are thieves, who are feeding on what belongs to the State, and eating up our butter and our meat.’’ A young Prussian officer pushes away his plate, and says loudly: “ 111-mannered crew—not a trace of tact and upbringing. If they had the slightest idea of good manners they would at least not have their food served in this room. lam not talking of tho injustice but only of the tact." At last the indignant spectators leave the room, “with nothing inside them but a sense of their tact and good upbringing."
