The following is a summary of the casualties of members of the Australian Imperial Force reported by cable, and showing the totals from the date of the embarkation of the force up to and including the casualty list published last week : Head 40,851 Missing l ; 900 Prisoners of war ... 3,028 Wounded „ 112,271 Sick 64,554 Casualty unknown ... 209
Total 228,913 The figures for" dead, missing, prisoners, and casualties unknown represent the actual j;et totals after all corrections—consequent upon erroneous reports, later advices, and so forth—have been taken into account. The figures for wounded and sick represent the totals reported by cable. The figures shown do nbt actually represent the totals recorded; but only as published in the casualty list issued to the date specified. The reason for this is that sufficient time must be allowed to ensure that the advices despatched to relatives are delivered before the news appears in the Press.
