Mrs Bai leysent in hor weekly donation of one dozen pairs of hospital slippers fcr Red Cross. RIFLEMAN T. J. BRYDEN. Among those posted as " missing" in a recent list of casualties is Rifleman T. J. Bryden. Cricketers will recognise in this their comrade " Jim" Bryden, of the Dunodin Club and earlier of the Grange Club. Rifleman Bryden volunteered for the 21st-Reinforcement*, but was rejected. He was then called up in tho ballot, passed as fit, and sailed with the 25th Reinforcements, with tho rank of corporal. On arrival in England ho was, much to his disappointment, again rejected for active service, but he was subsequently allowed to proceed to Franco. It is SRfe to say that a more popular man—popular, that is, in the best senseever stepped on a cricket field than " Jim" Bryden. He was unassuming, conscientious, and *' straight as a die. Many a young player has to thank him for valuable hints, and older players will remember acts of chivalry that betokened the true cricketer. ■ He captained the Dunedin first grade team for two or three seasons, and his only fanlt was the frequent underestimation of his own value to the team. Rifleman Bryden, though not a footballer, took a keen interest in the game, more particularly in the doings of tho Alhambra Club. He was employed by Messrs Nees and Co. when he was called up. Everyone who kuew "Jim" Bryden will miss him sadly if it should turn out that he is not to return.
