BOMBARDIER ESQUILANT. Mr .Alfred Esquilant received word yesterday that his second son, Bombardier Leslie Thomas Esquilant, had been killed in action in Fiance. Bombardier Esquilant was in his twenty-second year. He went away in the 11th Reinforcements as a member of the New Zealand Field Artillery, and served in Egypt before going to France. Before enlisting ho was in the employ of Mr J. R, Morris, photographer. The deceased soldier was vt-ry popular and was a keen sportsman. He was an ardent Territorial, and was particularly interested in all matters pertaining to gunnery, of which he had a remarkable knowledge for one so young. Mr Esquilant has another son at the front. PRIVATE GALE. Advice has been received by cable by Mr W. Pa<;et Gale tha't, '" s E <™» Private A. D. S. Gale, has been wounded in the shoulder, and is now in th.a Walton-on-Tharnes Hospital. Private Gale, who left with the 7th Reinforcements, was in Egypt for a short time, and thenco went to France. He was despatch runner in the Somme and Messines "battles. COLONEL BAILLIE. Sir Francis Bell, in moving in the Legislative Council yesterday to grant three days'- leave of absence to the Hon. Mr Baillie, stated that Mr Baillie had just received n-ews of the death of'his son, Colonel B.iillie, who had been killed in action. All the councillors would desire to convey to the venerable senior member Of their Chamber their sorrow and sympathy. Th« required leave -was granted.

LIEUTENANT-COLONEL EVANS Our Christchurch correspondent telePrivate advice has been received that Lieutenant-colonel Winter Evans, D.5.0., has been-killed in action. He was well known on the West Coast as manager of the Consolidated Group of gold mines, which • position he resigned to join the forces. He left New Zealand as captain, and was soon promoted., Only recently ho was awarded a bar to the D.S.O. He saw service in the Boer War, whore his father was treacherously killed by Boers under the white flag. PRIVATE EDWIN GEESBIE. Private Edwin Gebbie (killed in action) was the second son of Mr and Mrs James Gebbie, formerly of Oamaru and now of Balclutha. The deceased soldier was born in Dunedin and educated chiefly at Oamaru. After leaving school he joined his father in his nursery business at Oamaru, which he continued after his father's removal to Balclutha.
