ELGIN ROAD TRAM LINE
R. Bartholomew, S.M., resumed the Elgin _ road tram lino commission of inquiry this afternoon. Mr Bathgate (Maryhill) called Francis B. Smith, formerly engineer and Town Clerk of the Mornington Borough, who said ho was opposed to tho excessive expenditure on the Elgin road line. Of the two lines Maryhill would serve the. borough best. Practically all tho buildings in the district were situated between Elgin road and down below the Maryhill line. People objected to walk up a hill to a tram line. To Mr Nicolson: Ho objected to the Elgin road line on account of the capital cost. It was estimated to cost £13,000 but it cost £14,000. A great deal of that expenditure was for street, grading and wall construction.
Several other witnesses had to be called when we went to press.
