SUNDAY SCHOOL WORK

The quarterly meeting of the teachers and office-bearers of the Dunedin and Suburban Congregational Sunday Schools was held last evening at Mm ay Place Church Hall. After tea the president of the union (Rev. W. M. Grant) presided over the after meeting. He explained that owing to train disabilities, which he hoped would soon disappear, the meeting had to be held at Moray Place instead of at Port Chalmers, as 'intended. It was resolved that the date of closing of lessons for annual examination be September 15. On the motion of tho president, the meeting heartily congratulated the Rev. and Mrs Saunders on tho honor that had come to their son, Major_ L. Sauiuier.;, D.S.O. —Mr Saunders feelingly acknowledged the motion. It was decided to hold the next meeting at Leith street. Mr (J. M- Thomson gave an address on 'Equipment (if Teachers for Bible (..'lass.es and Sunday School Classes.' The speaker laid stress "upon the fact that while teachers were generally full of enthusiasm, they had not the . training of professional teachers, and in some cases were perhaps not quite fit. The lack of Bible knowledge among people to-day was appalling. Sunday school teachers should endeavor to iret their scholars to read a portion of tho~Bible every day, if only for five minutes. Early impressions outlasted most others, and this should be a stimulus to teachers. Teachers should not deal x too stronglv wlith the moral and religious aspect "of the lessons, and should strive to understand tho working of the child mind. Mr Thomson remarked that if the home's did their duty in the matter of religious- instruction there would be no need of Sundav schools. The home was the proper place for the training of children in holy things. Vocal solos were acceptably rendered by Miss Smith and Mr Douglas Saunders.
