ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY

»■ The monthly meeting of the Council oi .the above society was held last evening, Mr G. W. M'lntosh (president) occupying the chair. Mr J. Steven, curator, reported that the past month had been most disappointing in the matter of ova production. Since the 25th of July only 30,000 brown trout ova had been procured, which brought the total of this class up to date to 455,000. Of that number 110,000 had been packed and etjipped, 60,000 to the Department oi Game and Fisheries', Melbourne, and 50,000 to the Geelong Fish Acclimatisation Society. Another 100,000 was now practically ready for packing to complete the Geelong order, and 50,000 to Ballarat, but owing to tho strike in Victoria and the consequent stoppage of shipping between this country ana Australia there was. just the possibility of these orders not being filled this season.—Tho report was adopted. The Game Committee reported having received a letter from the secretary of tin' N.Z. Acclimatisation Societies, Wellington, advising that an amendment of the Act was necessary before anything could be done respecting the exposure of game in fish shops. Mr Urquhart, Hawea Flat, wrote that he knew of only one man in the Hawea district likely to consider a culling contract. Mr James Dobson, Aratapu, wrpte that he had decided to start a private gamo farm. Tho committee recommended, that a reply be tent that the society would bo glad to assist him in every way possible.—lt was decided to offer Mr Buckley (Hawea) 3s 6d per head for culling and Is 6d for each skin forwarded to Dunedin.—The report was then adopted on the motion of Mr C. P. M. Butterworth. Mr Butterworth gave notice of. motion—- " That a special meeting bo held on Wednesday next to rescind a re-solution carried on the 2nd of July, and to substitute therefor the following :* ' That tho sahnon_ season oven on the Ist of January and continue to Easter Tuesday (inclusive), and that the holder.oj a trout license pay a fee of 10s for quinnat salmon ; other to pay £l.'
