Tlie Auckland Racing Club were favored with glorious weather for their autumn meeting, which proved one of the most pleasant gatherings ever held at EllersUe. The racing was of a high standard, and there were enormous crowds present on. both days, the totalisator figures provino- a fresh record, £104,139 for the two days, £9,806 more than for the last Autumn Aleeting. In the Great Northern Oats on Saturday the defeat by Tressida of the favorite Devotion aroused great interest. It was a fine raco down the straight, and Iressida made a clear run, winning by a length and a-half. She was fifth favorite in a field of seven. Rekanui set the pace in the early stage, and Tressida finished in 2min 37sec, a fresh record. The winner, it is interesting to note, was secured for 95 guineas by Air J. S. Al’Leod (Hawke’s Bay) at Air W. Brown’s (New South Wales) sale of yearlings in 1915. The last record for the race was Bleriot’s in 1913 2min 40sec.

Iho Hon. J. D. Ormond’s Hymestra was inade favorite for the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, and defeated Mr H. 3i. Troutbeck’s Simonides by half a length. The time, Imin 14 3-ssec, was a fresh record, the last being Imin Ifiscput up in 1912 by Our King, and exactly Isec faster than Bjorneborg’s time last year.

The Easter Handicap was, of com-c, the great event of the day. It also produced the big surprise of the meeting, the favorite division being badly left. Messrs V. and E. Riddiford’s Menelaus, the winner, was 10th on the list, the second horse, Bjorneborg, was 11th, and the third, Tact, was 14th. The 7th favorite, Bunting, was last, and Colonel Soult, who_ was appraised correctly by the public, being 13th on the list, was next to last. Housewife was made a hot favorite, and she went out for her preliminaries in fine style. At the post, however, she misbehaved so much that the start was delayed nearly 15 minutes. Afc the close of the first round, Jack Delavel, the greatest outsider, created excitement by racing up to the leaders, but he was unable to last at the pace. Then Menalaus dashed into the lead, and although challenged by Bjorneborg, always had the better of him. Menelaus 'retrieved his Mr.sterton defeats, and paid a big dividend Tho time, Imin 40sec, was I l-ssec slower than Chortle's record in 1916. The. Great Northern St. Leger Stakes, run-on Monday, was a disappointing race, in nnat only a trio competed, and they were accurately judged by the public, the winner, iho Toff, being the first favorite, the second horse, Bjorneborg, second -avonte, and the third, Rekanui, third in the public favor. It was rather an easy win by two lengths. The mile and threequarters was accomplished in 3min 2sec, which was 5 4-ssec faster than Desert Holers race I*tsb autumn.

hunting was made favorite for the St. George s Handicap, and finished third. It was a good race between Toatoro (eighth favorite) and Bedford (ninth lavonte) for the post, Toatoro only getting homo by a neck. Colonel Soult was made second favorite, which, was surprising after his performance in the Champagne Stakes, and he rewarded his supporters by being badly left. Toatero’s time of 2min 35sec was lust 3-ssec slower than the record put up by Multiply in 1915. The times throughout the meeting were fast, and it was quite surprising to find a record had been put up m the St. Leger Stakes, for instance, and the performance of the brilliant Desert Gold eclipsed. The Rebel attracted a good deal of interest by his plucky effort in the FT. George’s 'When making efforts to improve his position on two occasions, he met with accidental obstruction, and finally finished fourth, close up to the third horse. Merry Roe was another candidate who made an effort, and at. <me stage she threatened to race past the leaders, but she faltered, and her rld-r discovered her to be suffering from a w-'-'k member, and it is possible this mav brirm about, her retirement.
