AIACANDREW ROAD. Tho breaking-up ceremony of tho Macandrew Road School, held* in the South Dunedin Town Hall on Tuesday was hugely attended. In tho afternoon the infant classes received thoir prizes at the i ( tool, hut the evening function was of a more pretentious-: character. Mr G. F. Tlie yearly increasing mtere.-i, displayed by the friends of the Albany Street School justified t-ho committee in hoicking the vnH.on celebration of Standards TV., V.. and VI. in Burns Hall last evening, disposing of the lower standards in tho~school hall ill (he afternoon. There was a splcndid.lv big gathering, and special interest was lent to the occasion by the presence of the Chief Justice (Sir Robert .Stout), who was himself a teacher at the eld " Stone School’’ 53 years ago. The musical programme was an excellent one, including selections by the school baud, part pongs by pupils, a band quartet, and a piccolo solo ; while there were aim exhibitions of dancing by the pupils of Standard 11. and of physical drill by the senior bovs.
The Chairman (Mr J. H. AVilldnsonl. in his opening remarks, referred particularly to the enthusiasm displayed bv the head master (Mr J. Rennie)to whosv efforts were due the inception and. success of the school band. The school had raired £2lO for patriotic purposes, of which £l2O had been raised by the band alone. Mr Wilkinson proceeded to relate a little of tho early history of the school, its erection _ two years before the abolition of provincial govrrnnwjit, r.nd its opening in 1874, when Sir Robert Stout was a member of the Education Board. The Chief Justice’s presence on this occasion, therefore, linked in special way the past of the school with its present." Some people said that prize-giving should be abandoned because of the war, but he did not see much self-sacrifice on the part of some older people, and if these latter wanted to see school prizes done away with they should give up all idea themselves of prizes and unnaoMsary things. He would like to
commend to the children a maxim made by a groat man who wiaa drowned in the .terrible Lusitania disaster: “Do what you have to do as well as you can, and bo kind,” Tho young men of New’ Zealand were fighting to-day for the future libertv of the children, and to uphold the flag o*f righteousness and liberty and truth. What ougnt the children to do? They should make themselves good citizens, and they would find in the application of this maxim the best of passports in life. Hie Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) presented tiie prizes in Standard V. Ho said that ho did not know what they would have done in the past two; years without the children of tho schools. To Mr Connie particularly he owed a deep debt of gratitude for the help ho had given, and also to tho Albany Street School Band, the pioneer school band of Dunedin, which had never failed to respond when called iinon. father of an old Moray Place schoolboy, who has paid the supreme sacrifice in Franco. When lying in hospital in a critical condition the soldier forwarded £2 to his father to bo spent in his father’s own benefit, but in the circumstances of his soil’s death the father thought it was most fitting that the money should go half to a modal at the boy’s old public school and half to another medal at his old Sunday School. Mr Clark expressed the hope that Stevens would treasure the medal, and that it would be a call to him always to do his duty.

Air Swann also presented two band medals, and, in doing so, mentioned that under a new arrangement for next year tho hand members would be under an outside competent instructor, and would receive good musical tuition. A programme of action songs and recitations delighted the audience. The prizes were distributed by Mr F. J. Campbell (chairman of the School Committee). In the evening the old Presbyterian Church was crowded, when the children attending the higher standards contributed to a programme of sor.gs. recitations, choruses, and dances. Mr Campbell presided. The inspector’s report, be said, was very gratifying, and reflected credit on the teaching staff. There were 294 pupils on the roll, and the attendance had been generally good. The number entitled to attendance certificates was 110. During the year the girls had been knitting and sewing forthe soldiers, and had made 279 articles, which wore handed to the Women’s Patriotic Association. The scholars had contributed £8 to Dr Bernardo's Homes, and £4O had been divided between the soldiers’ fund, the Jack Cornwell fund, and the Belgian relief fund. Of that amvmt £l7 had resulted from bottle collections. A shelter shed had been erected by the Education Baord. and it was hoped another class room would soon be added to the school premises. NORTH-EAST HARBOR. This school broke up for the holidays on Tuesday evening, when the schoolroom. was uncomfortably crowded by parents- and friends to see the prizes distributed and to enjoy the concert programme provided by the pupils. The hitter ijave a very enjoyable treat, thanks to tuo training of their teachers. Mr Hollyer,_ chairman of committee, after ajxilogising for the absence of the Rev. f.t. Macdonald, distributed the numerous and valuable prizes to the children and the silver medal to the dnx. WEST TAIERI. A concert was held at Woodside last week in connection with the school vacation. Mr D. Sutherland occupied the chair. The lirst part of the concert consisted of songs, recitations, dancing, and dialogues by the children. These, were all well rendered, and much appreciated by a large audience. The second part was given by local talent and friends from a distance. At the conclusion Air Macpherson moved a hearty vote of thanks to the performers and the children for the pleasant evening they had given. This was carried, together with a special vote of thanks to Miss I. M'Diarnml for her assistance with the children. Master Harold Ferguson presented (Miss Gibb (assistant teacher) with a handbag. He said the children wore all sorry at her leaving, and asked her to accept the gift as a token of the high esteem in which they held her. -Miss Janet Marshall, on behalf of the children, presented Mr Kelly, who had been relieving for fully four months, with an inscribed umbrella*. She said that all the children felt grateful to him for his kindness end the interest he had taken in the.ir progress. Both teachers suitably replied. On Friday a. number of ladies met in the hall to say good-bye to bliss Gibb. Mrs \V. Reid occupied the, chair, and after some music, recitation, and singing, Miss Gibb was presented with a gold pendant and chain as a token of esteem from the ladies of "West Taieri. Miss Gibb feelingly replied. Mr Kelly expressed his pleasure at seeing Misa Gibb honored. Ho bad been some months in the school, and could testify not only to the good work done there, but also to" her kind and obliging manner, which made it a pleasure to work with her.
MOSGIEL. The I-.losgiol District High School break-up was held in the local Coronation Tiall last evening. An excellent concert programme was gone through. Mr T. Walsh (chairman of the committee) presided, and said that this year the concert was in aid of the prize and Red Crr,ss_ funds. The committee had decided to hold a picnic locally, and thus try to rewmrd the children for their year’s hard study. Ho thanked the school staff for the excellent work done during the year, especially the acting-rector (Mr Graham) for the work done- during Major Moir’s absence. The programme consisted of choruses, recitations, drills, dialogues, action songs, etc., and the teachers are to bo congratulated on the success achieved. Misses C. Chcyno and A. Keys played a piano duet. A recitation by* Master D, M'Auslin. ‘ The Errand Boy,’ merited the applause accorded it. The, rector reported that the attendance throughout the year had been very satisfactory. The secondary department had shown an increase, necessitating the. appointment of an additional teacher. This year out of 44 who cat for proficiency oo parsed and six gained, competency, there being only two failures. Addresses were delivered by Mcs-fio J. Wallace and R. H. 'fodd (ir.-ambcr.-, of the Education Board) and M. C-uh.-n ; and Mr White (head master) thanked those who had so generously ,;ontrlbnb>d (n the prize fund. The prizes were distributed by Messrs, Wr.lhu-a and Cohen, and an enjoyable programme of musical and other items vr.i* contributed Kv tho children.
ST. CLAIR PRIVATE KINDERGARTEN. At the St. Clair Presbyterian Church Hall on Tuesday a large number of parents and friends attended the closing of the kindergarten and primary school which is conducted there. The. hall was tastefully decorated, entirely by the work of the children. One of the principal decorations' was a large folding screen depicting scenes peculiar to Christmasticle. The children went through the games and’ exercises very prettily, the marching being, particularly good. The Rev, J, Millef complimented the children and teachers on their exhibition, and spoke highly of the influence exerted by such careful training as the children received from Aliss Lake and her assistants. Carrying out the spirit of Christmas, the children, denying themselves little luxuries, have contributed sufficient funds to send a large parcel of toys to the children in the Dunedin Hospital. Before leaving, the children were given small gifts, and they in their turn took homo gifts to their mothers and fathers, made by themselves.
