AN APPEAL

* TO THE SCHOOL CHILDREN OF OTACO.

JOHN TRAVERS CORNWELL. Extract from Admiral Jellicoe's report on the Jutland naval battle:— A report from the commanding officer of the Chester gives a splendid instance of devotion to duty. Boy (Ist class) John Travers Cornwell, of the Chester, was- mortally wounded in the action. He, nevertheless, remained standing alone at a most exposed post, quietly waiting orders, till the end of the action, with the gun's crew dead and wounded all round him. His age was under 16* years. I recommend his case for special recognition as an acknowledgement of the high example set by him. Her 'Majesty Queen Mary has intimated her warm approval of the appeal that is being made by the educational authorities of Great Britain to the children of the Empire to subscribe to a national memorial to Jack Cornwell, whose heroic action was fittingly described in an article, entitled ' Faithful Unto Death' that appeared on Page 2 of Saturday's issue. The fund so to be raised is to be earmarked fo'- the endowment in the Queen Mary Star and Garter Home at Richmond (London) of a ward for disabled sailors or marines, which will be known as the "Firet-claes Jack Cornwell Ward." Hope Welcomes All Who Enter Here -is the apt and happy inscription chosen by Her Majesty for the portal of the projected institution, Tho scholars of the public and private schools in Otago have in the past been loyal supporters of every patriotic fund organised by this journal, and we ask them out of their penny banks to send us £IOO as the Otago children's .-cntribution to such a praiseworthy purpose. We are confident that they will prove equal to tho occasion, and.that their liberality will be spontaneous and immediate. All moneys received by us will be forwarded in due course to the High Commissioner for New Zealand. We have received £3 15s from the pupils of St. Andrew's Collegiate School, also 2s 6d from "Wee Mark and Wuzzie" for the Jack Cornwall Cot fund at Queen Mary's Richmond Hospital.
