The barque Daniel and the barquentino Wangamu engaged in an interesting ocean race from Australia to Auckland recently. The Daniel left Clarence Town, Now South Wales, on August 4 with a cargo of hardwood, and left NewCastle on August 5 with superphosphates. A barque thought to be the Daniel, passed Cape Maria Van Diemon. bound east, at 2.50 p.m. on Mondav, while tho lightkeepcr at Cape Brett reported that a barquentine passed south at 4 p.m. on Monday. A telegram received from Auckland on Tuesday night stated tliat the Wanganui had reached port,, thus winning tho race. °

The ' Hawke's Bay Herald' reports that at 11 a.m. on Mondav. when the Rosamond was berthing at 'the Glasgow wharf, Napier, she came into collision with the front portion of the wharf. About Bft of tho wharf was smashed in, large totara posts being split almost to matchwood. The vessel escaped with little damage, mainly owing to the anchor taking the main force of tho blow, although the points of the anchor pierced the plates on the bow. A number of men from Messrs J. J.
