AUCKLAND NOTES

[Special to the ' Stab.']

AUCKLAND, Wednesday. % The chief topic in racing circles to-day is Waimai's splendid victory in tho National Steeplechase at Riccarton, and it only wants 'Jc Onga to win the hurdle?, to fill Auckland's cup of joy to orsrflowiiK/. [Tho second "leg" of the double did not. materialise on Thursday.—Sports Ed. E.S.] Waimai was a hot favorite here for the Steeplechase, and that the Spalpeen gelding justified all expectations was the «übject of all-round congratulations. Spalpeen was a great jumper before His accident, and with Ell Gallo, winner of ths Great Northern Double, and Waimai as his progeny, it shows, that ko transmitted his abilities in the jumping line to his offspring. There has not been much of noto at Ellerslie during tho past week. Pendoon lias been showing out from the crowd as one of the most improved horses in training,, and it.is suggested that he will do something in handicaps during the coming season.

The two-year-old parade at, the Paku-ra-nga Hunt Ciub meeting on the 26th should prove ralher_ interesting, as there are very many promising youngsters about now, including several " Australian-bred ones.

, The AvoncaJe Jockey Club have issTied their programme for th© two meetings of the coming season. The stakes total £6',lW, an increase of £2BO comnared with last year.

A Sydney cable advises that-Mr G. L. Stead's steeplechaser Tim Doolain has been' reshipped to Now Zealand.
