MILITARY HOSPITALS
THE SICKNESS OUTBREAK.
[Special to tuv, ' Star.']
WELLINGTON. August 17. Seven eases in the military hospitals out of about 400 patients arc classed as serious to-day, but your correspondent was informed by the medical authorities that they still regard the situation confidently. The prompt measures taken at Trentham appear to ha.ve stayed the spread of meningitis, while the improved weather has checked pneumonia. Searching inquiries are progressing with the object of discovering the centres of infection, if any, but "the authorities believe that the increase of sickness is due entirely to the prolonged spell of bad weather. The Director of Medical Services emphasised to-day that the number of hospital cases did not indicate the real extent of sickness, since, as a precautionary measure, the men were hospitalled for slight ailments which probably would be disregarded in civilian life.
