AN EXPLANATION WANTED.

TO THE EDITOR. 1 Jh 1 ,^ 1 S nl' in 6 . uews rc P° rfc to-dav, both the Otago University Council and the Government Education Department have refused to a returned soldier the privilege of tree instruction in a medical course at the Otago University Medical School. Of "course it the soldier in question is not qualified edu-ca-wonally to begin such a course, no more is to be said. But if he is so qualified, I am sure the public would like some more information on the matter. What are the insuperable financial obstacles in the case? Will the addition of one more student so add to the work, without increasing the fees, that there will no longer be that nice adjustment between fees received and work done 3 No-doubt the publio are well aware that they are being continually called on both privately and through the Government contributions to support and extend the Medical bchool. It owes a, great part of its existence and support to the general public, yet only a section of that public can hope to- benefit from it individually. Evidently the time has not yet come when equal opportunity is to be afforded to all. Yet that is one of the watchwords of modern education. It wou'd oo interesting, at all events, to know winsuch a deserving individual as one who has risked his life for his country and its institutions is to be denied this particular opportunity.—l am, etc., . . ,„ Liberal.
