SCHOOL COMMITTEE REPORTS

LAWRENCE

The District High School Committee report that the past year, so far as the school is concerned, has been a. successful one, tlie attendance showing an increase. The roll numbers are: Primary, 153; secondary, 39; total, 192. As in previous years, the committee were able to congratulate the rector and his staff on the highlysatisfactory report of the Education Board's inspectors. Last October a number of the pupils of the Albany .Street (Dunodin) School visited Lawrence and gave an entertainment to assist the finances of the High School's fife and drum band, tho amount realised being £lB. The thanks of the committeo are due to Mr Rennie (head master of the Albany Street School) for the band's visit, and to all the local householders who billeted the visitors. The local band as now well equipped with uniforms and instruments, and its services at local functions are a commendable feature. Tho committee's credit balance at the end of the financial year amounted to £47 15s. The .expenditure exceeded the receipts by £ls 18s. The incoming committee will require to be careful of the finances. The scholars who presented themselves for the various examination* held in December succeeded in gaining- good results, and a number have since received appointments in the Civil Service. Mr It. W .S. Botting (assistant master) has been granted leave of ab:-evice to join the reinforcements rn-eparinp fnr service abroad, and is at present training for a commission at one of the military ramps in the North Island. A relieving teacher (Miss Louden) has been appointed tn fill the vacancy on the school staff. A large number of the school children arc taking an active part in preparing articles of" clothing,- etc. for the boys at the front, and their efforts are. greatly appreciated by the local Patriotic Committee.
