GREEN STREET OR MAIN NORTH ROAD?

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—Surely the time has now arrived when the residents of North-eASt Valley should enter an emphatic protest agains"t the action of the City Council i'n. ignoring the wishes of Valley residents in their expressed desire that the name of the Main North road should not be altered. The deputation were assured by the Mayor that their requests should receive very careful consideration. I need not say that it was with feelings of astonishment that Valley residents found that tho wishes of the deputation had been ignored, despite the fact that when the council's, representative conferred with the Early Settlers' Association it was distinctly stated by that body that it was their unanimous" wish that'the old name Should remain. Mr M'Curdie can correct me if I am wrong. Speaking for the business Section of the Valley, I may say we are emphatically opposed to tho change. _ The proposed name, Green street, is as unwise as it is unsuitable. Cr Green seems to think that the opposition is confined to a small coterie of municipal opponents. Let me disillusion him on that point. If he will take the troublo to look through the petition presented to the council ho will find the names of men who have voted for him for manv vears. _ I think Cr Green will admit that I am in a fair position to judge whether tho proposal is a popular one". Weil. I have yet to meet the man who approves of the change of name. Cr Green will absolve men from all personal feeling in this matter. He lias done mo several courtesies, for which I am grateful, but I feel that I have a public duty in this matter which 1 must discharge." In my eyes the principle is entirely wrong and indefensible, and I would oppose the alteration just as strongly were it proposed to call it Begg street or even Clark street. A few years back, when the City Council proposed to alter the name Gladstone road to Dundee street, Cr Green came to our rescue and largely to his efforts the old name was retained. Let him once more rise to the occasion when a much larger issue_ is raised, and he will receive the sincere thanks of the Valley ratepayers, in whose interests he has worked so well.—l am, etc., W, M. Roberts. April 3.
