HENRY JAMES DEAD
Press Association—By /Telegraph—Copyright,! .LONDON, February 29. ) The death is reported of .Mr Henry?ij James, at the age of 72. [Henry James, novelist, essayist, andi critiCj was American by birth, but cos- j mopolitan by education and instinct.. He! had for some time resided in London, and i his repudiation of American citizenship I and his naturalisation as a British sub- j ject as a protest against America's neutrality in the war will still be fresh in 1 our readers' memory. His first publica- 1 tion was issued in "1871, and a long se- j quence of works has flowed from his pen, | one of his last books being ' Notes > on [ Novelists.' This has been highly praised i by critics for its subtle analysis of me- ! thod. By reason of his superb crafts- ■ manship Henry James has always ap-. pealed to the select few—more so thaitj to the general reading public, to many of whom his extreme fastidiousness and hisanalytical precision probably savored somewhat of hair-splitting. He has for* this reason been termed the novelist. . Among his works are ' A Pas-' sionate Pilgrim, ' The American,' ' The* Bostottians,* ' Terminations,' ' The Out* cry,' ' French Poets and Novelists,' ' lish Hours,' ' The American Scene,' etc.J
