Tbr vessel is of 7,333 tons. Captain Applcyard, late of the Waipori, has taken command of the Flora, in place of Captain H, Drydon, who left the vessel at Wellington on Thursday. It is reported that the Vacuum Oil Company recently placed orders with the Harian and Hollingsworth Corporation, ot Wilmington, for the construction of an oil-tank steamer of 50,000 barrels capacity, to be built on the Isberwood system, and a cargo steamer of 3,500 tons capacity, and with the Union Iron Works. San Francisco, for an oil-tank stearner of 75,000 barrels capacity, to be constructed on the Isherwood system. The Flora arrived this forenoon at Port Chalmers from Bluff. She leaves, probably to-night, for the Chatham Islands. The Kowhai leaves Bluff to-night for Dunedin, thence to Oamaru, Timaru, Napier. and Gisborne. She leaves here tomorrow. The Corinna leaves here to-day for New Plymouth via ports. The Mailai. at present under repair at Port ('haliners, came out of dork this afternoon, and is expected to leave here next Tuesday for Lyttelton. She then proceeds to Wellington, Sydney, and Hobart in place of the Moeraki, which withdraws for survey. The Moeraki resumes on March 15, leaving Lyttelton for Wellington, Svdnev. and Hobart in place of the Manuka, ‘which withdraws for survey. Tiie Manuka resumes running on March 29 from Lyttelton, thence to Wellington, Sydney, and Hobart in place of the Maitai, which takes up the San Francisco running. Tile Invercargill left this afternoon with general cargo for Invercargill. The John is expected to leave late tonight for Wanganui via ports. the ferry service. The Maori reached Lyttelton at 7.5 a.m., and connected, with the first express. DEMAND FOR TONNAGE. The rapid rise in freights and the increasing demand for steamship tonnage has resulted in many Australian steamers being purchased by owners in other connfries, and several well-known vessels have during the past year left for their new sphere oversea. This week’s mail reports that two more vessels of the Adelaide -Steamship Company have been sold—The Innamincka und Allingf-a—t>o E&sterii. buyera. The Innnmincka will bo leaving c, shortly for Hongkong. She is a vessel of 2.501 tons, and was built in 1890 by Napier. Shanks, and Bell, of Glasgow. I ho Allinga is a vessel of 2,242 tons, and was built by Scott and 00., of Greenock, ;n 1897.
