RENAMING OF MORNINGTON STREETS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln reply to the letter of “'Old Resident” in to-night’s ‘Star,’ my object in writing to you xe the above was to draw attention to what I think is not seemly—viz., that in, renaming the streets : one soldier's name should be submitted lor another, and especially historic names like Havelock and Outram, two of the noblest of our Indian heroes ; also that of Cardigan, the leader of the Light Brigade' -at Balaclava. These might be allowed to stand and other streets be named after our own boys. T thank- “Old Resident” for pointing out that I mentioned some who nave given their lives for the great cause. When writing I only thought of one of these, and said that was a name which should always be honored. Tonight I am reminded of another which I mentioned. Our soldiers, living ot dead, deserve any Konor we can give tbom. and I b.ope no future generation of City conncillors will rename any street which bears the name of a soldier. I note that poets have also been .thought of. A street is to. be named Horace—a- good name. Byron is also to be commemorated; but it seems a pity that Milton is to give place to the latter. Both were great poets and worthy of remembrance. Although not a new resident, I do not know if Campbell street was named after the author of ‘ Ye Mariners of England,’ ‘ The Battle of the Baltic,’ etc., or the soldier who led the Highland Brigade at Alma, and quelled the great mutiny in India.—X am, etc., Mornington Resident. February 28.
