ORPHANAGE PICNYC

On Saturday members of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Club tendered an outing to the children of the various orphanages. There assembled 281 children from the following orphanages:—Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, St. Mary's, and the Industrial School. ■ As the children embarked on the various boats each one was handed a bag of lollies, and biscuits were put on board the boats. Shortly after 2 p.m. Commodore Hanlon's Inishfree headed the procession of boats, the following taking part:—Norana, Waitai, Rawhitiroa, Kiwi, Vida, Doreen, Eureka, Revenge, Akarana, Vanguard, Isobel, Maitai. Palmer, W., Atalanta, and Savannah. This flotilla presented quite an imposing sight as it wended its way down the harbor. The boats proceeded round Quarantine Island and back to Broad Bay, where the children were disembarked and entertained at the residences of Mesdames A. C. Hanlon, R. Hudson, A. Begg, A. Miller, J. E. Galbraith, Dr Emily Nees. Misses Waters, Nees, and Roach. After partaking of the good things provided the party then assembled at the residence of Commodore Hanlon,, where each child was presented with a gift. On behalf of the children the Rev. Mr Axelsen conveyed thanks to the members of the club for the outing, and mentioned how greatly the children looked forward to this picnic each that it was a great pleasure indeed to the members of the club to be able to give the children this outing, and he thought that members looked forward to this day each year as much as the children themselves. He said that while the members were at all times willing to do their part in providing this treat for the children, thanks were duo to the ladies for the part they had taken in entertaining the children, and ho called for three cheers for the ladies, which were lustily given. Cheers were also given for the' members of the club, and the singing of "For they are jolly good fellows" and the National Anthem brought the programme to a close. The children then embarked, and reached Dunedm a little before 7 p.m. The details of the picnic were organised by Mr !'• H. Nees, who deserves praise, for everything was carried out without a hitch.
