ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

SUDDEN DEATH. Ben Innes, a negro about 53 years of age, was found dead an Ins bed at his house, No. 49a Si. David street, last evening. Not seeing him all day, neighbors took alarm, and procured Constable Brownlie, who climbed through a window and found deceased lying, in such a position as to suggest that he had died- during sleep. Innes was seen at 7.30 p.m. on the 7th, and then appeared to be in his usual state of health; moreover, at 9.30 a.m. yesterday a neighbor heard him call to the postman, but did not see him, it being his habit not to rise until about noon, ‘it is understood that he had been attending the hospital as an out-patient, and suffered from his heart. Moreover, he seemed to anticipate sudden death, as he had requested neighbors to inform Mrs Don (of the Charitable Aid Board) should lie die suddenly.

A tragic bereavement has befallen ilr and Mrs George MTLean, a young couple who are engaged in dairy farming on land between the “Letter Box,” at Mataura Island, and Pine Bush (reports the Wyndham Farmer’). They were busy with their herd in tho milking byre on Sunday evening at about 7 o’clock, when they missed the elder of their two little children Allan Alexander, a boy aged two years and four months, who had accompanied them to the byre. They at once instituted a search, and found the lifeless body off the poor little fellow caught in some shrubbery in the Titiroa Stream, which runs through the property. All attempts to restore animation were without avail, although the child could only have been away for about seven minutes. An inquest into the cause of death was held in tho Courthouse, Wyndham, on Monday, before the district coroner, air G. Crulclcshank, S.M. After the evidence of the father had been taken a verdict of “Accidental drowning” was recorded.

i\lr Thomas King Mason, a married man with a young family, and a selector on th.e Mangatainoka Block, was drowned while crossing the Mangahao River (near Pahiatua) with a horse and trap. He was driving sheep across, and some of the latter went down-stream. Mr Mason went after them, and disappeared. The body has not been recovered. Harold Gardiner, aged 11 years, living in Eden terrace (Auckland), was killed by a motor coach yesterday. Whilst crossing the roadway he became confused as to direction. The coach was returning from a funeral. Mr David Scott, 60 years of age, owner of a small farm and a coal mine which he works himself at Awakino, near Kurow, left Kurow at 9.45 on Friday night with a horse and dray on his way home. It was a very dark night, and when not far from home the horse took a wrong turning and fell over an ment, followed by the dray, which turned completely over. The horse was killed, and Mr Scott was pinned under the dray. He succeeded in _ extricating himself, but could not move his legs, and dragged himself by his hands nearly half a mile to Mr Walter Munro’s, where he lay, utterly spent, groaning in the yard. Mr Munro heard the groans and at once went out found Mr Scott, and sent for. a doctor, and the injured man was taken to the w c^diijion,;.
