EMPIRE PRESS UNION
The annual report of the New Zealand branch of the abo.vo shows nine full members and 33 associates, and mentions that £SO was voted from the funds for the relief of distressed Belgian and French journalists through the medium of the executive of the British Institute of The report goes on to say:— It was with very deep regret those New Zealand members of the Press Union who were delegates to the Conference in England in 1909 read the cabled intelligence of the death of Lord Burnham. He occupied the chair at the inaugural banquet, given at the White City on June 5, and held the position of president of the union from its formation until his death. The delegates were entertained at Hall Barn, his charming residence in Buckinghamshire, and his courtesy and friendliness to the pressmen from distant parts of the Empire are among the bright and pleasant reminiscences of the memorable event which brought them together. .Lord Burnham had reached the advanced age of 83, and he had won for himself the sincere respect and regard of the newspaper world among which had moved for long years as a sagacious' and enterprising newspaper proprietor and manager whose success was well deserved. The income of the branch up to the end of May 31, 1916 (including a balance brought forward of £65 12s 6d), was £ll7 12s 6d. The expenditure amounted to £7O 7s. of which sum £67 12s 6d was remitted to the council in London, leaving a credit of £47 5s 6d, in addition to which there is £l2 outstanding in subscriptions, the greater part of which, it is hoped, will be paid by the date of the annual meeting.
