CITY COUNCIL

The fortnightly--meeting of the City Council was held last evening, ami attended by the Mayor, (Mr J. J. Clark), Crs Carroll, Hancock, Wilson, Taverner, Black, Sinclair, Green. White, Begg; Scott; Lunn, Douglas, ai’d ■ Shaddock.

the Mayor said that, as councillors were no doubt aware by, the public. Press, the Public Service section of the Queen Carnival had generously presented to the City the picture ‘ Storming of the Dardanelles,’ by Mr E. A. Hawcridge. Mr W. Davidson was present to formally hand. the picture over to the City.—On the motion of the Mayor it was decided—“ That the council, on behalf of the citizens, accept the presentation of the picture, and tender the Public Service section of the Queen Carnival their sincere thanks for their generous gift.” The Town Clerk of Maori Hill wrote that his council had forwarded a petition to the Governor praying that the City of Dunedin and the Borough of Maori Hill he constituted one united borough.—Received. —Works Committee.— Cr Green moved the adoption of the Works Committee’s report, in which it was recommended that authority be granted to invito tenders for a suitable motor car for the works department. The report was adopted. —Electric Power.— Cr Sbacklock, in moving the adoption of the Electric Power and Lighting Committee, said that the New Zealand Wax Vesta Company, with the assistance of the electric power and lighting department, had been experimenting for some time in the production of potassium chloride, and now the company desired to have power put through their works for this purpose. The committee had granted this application, but only during the pleasure of the department. Cr Sinclair mentioned that a party of councillors had recently paid a visit to Waipori. He was one of them, and he had been impressed by the fact that the Waipori road should be widened at several turns where it was impossible for two vehicles to pass. Cr Sbacklock, in replying to Cr Sinclair, said that so far as the widening of the road was concerned be did not intend to advocate that anything further be done, as the road was ample for the purposes of the department. They would be obliged to keep perhaps three men continually on this road, and where material was required for repairs it could be taken out of the bank on tho top side of the road. By degrees the road would be widened, and . the curves would also be improved. -The report was adopted. —Tramways.—

Cr Wilson, in moving the adoption of the Tramways Committee’s report, said that an agreement had been arrived at with the Tramways Union. Tho committee had agreed to pay rates slightly in advance of the Christchurch award. The principal items affected were that all niotonnen in the service received per hour increase. Conductors with less than one year's service would receive an increase of -jd, car examiners an increase of £d, conductors with over three years’ service, an increase, of -Jd, leading linesmen an increase of IJd. The principal set-off the committee had was that the. manager was now able to work whatever men were required on Sundays without coming into conflict with certain terms of the old award. When a man had to go off shift suddenly it used to cost the department a considerable amount to finish that shift, whereas now it would not cost them anything. It was a three years’ award, and, taking everything into consideration, he thought they had done well. They had always pulled well with the. union, and it was a matter of congratulation that they had managed to settle this matter out of court. The report was adopted.
