DRAUGHTS NOTES

[By S.D.G.] —Aleetings.— To-night.—Andoreon Bay Club, at Druids’ Hall ; St. Kilda, at Glasgow ctre'et, South Dunedin. * ’ Saturday and Wednesday.—Otago Club, at Y.AI.C.A. Rooms, Moray place. ' The sympathy of players is extended to the energetic secretary of the Otago Club, Mr J. B. Shanks, in the bereavement suffered through the demise of his father last- week. Tho position given in last week’s notes is not a new one. It took first prize in the ‘ Otago Witness ’ problem competition some years ago, the late J. N. Broclie, of this City, being the author. The problem is:—Black, 13, 21, K, 24, 28; White 16, 29, 30, 31, K, 15; White to play and win. The solution is:—. 15-18 28-12 11-15 16-19 22-17 24-27 30-26 12-16 18-22 23-30 31-24 13-17 15-18 19-25 29-25 White wins. The tournament of the Anderson Bay Club is drawing to a conclusion. Tonight’s play will practically finish it. R Cox is leading so far, but the declaring of the handicaps will tell the tale. With the exception of two or three nights given oyer to games of instruction and the match with St. Kilda, the tourney has occupied attention every night, and the committee m charge have seen to it that no pairs were jett unpiayed if it was at all practicahte to arrange them. The result of this is seen in the early termination of the tournament. In all probability the Bay will be out for the return match with St. Kilda- The tourney play has been good practice and they should render a good acoomit of themselves.

Tho attendances at the practice meetincß of the Otago Club show that keen interest is maintained in tho tourney and competitions, ail of which should soon be brought to a conclusion, and the junior championship started. This latter is between eight players, the last four in No 1 Competition, and the first four in No’ 2 Competition. Interesting games should result.

I hero is no word of the executive of tlie New Zealand Draughts Association making a move with regard to the next tournament, whibh has been allotted to j e fi |n gt°n. It is time something was done, as the time soon slips by. Indications point to the possibility of the Wellington W.AI. Club declining the responsibility of carrying out the fixture. If that should eventuate, it will necessitate the making of other arrangements, and it behoves the executive to be on the alert, and' find out exactly what the position is. In the Empire City the feeling seems* to be in favor of postponing the tourney'altoget her lor this year. Th© championsliip of New’South Wales has been won by Air E. W. Smith, .of Sydney, with Air Griffin second and Air Lee thud, ihe new champion '* native of U aiwickslure, England, vhere lie was V l v 7 J" I t:he €ar ‘y nineties h© Rent to Now South Wales, where he learned the game, and has now for several years been regarded as one of their strongest players. hj
