DUNEDIN CRICKET CLUB

We take from the annual report the following items: — Owing chiefly to the war, the membership fell off to a marked degree; in fact, it was found impossible during the season to keep even three teams going. The B and C teams suffered most in this respect. Seldom did these teams take the field with the full eleven. Although the weather conditions were good, practice by members was neglected, and during the latter part of the season was practically dropped. This was regrettable, in view of the good wickets provided by the groundsman, Mr Ross. Financially, also, the yeaj has been unsatisfactory'. The balance-sheet shows a loss of £6 Is 4d on the season’s work, due mainly to the falling off of the membership. The club’s reserve fund is gradually diminishing, and will not tide the club over much longer unless some scheme is devised for increasing the revenue. There were six unfinancial members, the outstanding subscriptions amounting to £lO 10s. The first eleven played 17 matches. Of these four were won, nine lost, and four drawn. V. C. Hardie headed the batting average with 91 for two innings, B. Cramond being next with 19 for six innings played In bowling, R. Johnston, 14.1 for 24 wickets, had the best figures, but P. Graham (18.5 for 2o wickets), A. Given (16.6 for 36 wickets), and W. W. Mackersy (20 3 for 30 wickets) did the lion’s share of the bowling. The B team played 18 matches won 3, lost 10, and 5 drawn. V. C. Hardie also headed this batting average with 24.5 for 15 innings. M. Thompson also batted well with 25.8 for 17 innings. In bowling H. Bunn was first with an average of 8.5 for 40 wickets—an excellent performance for a new plaver. M Thompson captured 55 wickets, average 9.8. The G team, as in previous seasons extracted a great deal of pleasure out of their games, although, as with the B team, they were handicapped by being unable to place a full team in the field 5 In all, 17 matches were played, 5 won 15 lost, and 1 was drawn. D.‘ Wilkie headed the batting average with 17.1 for 16 innings. In bowling T. Eggleton was first with an average of 11.1 for 47 wickets.’ No centuries were scored by any of our members during the season. The' best individual scores were:—A team, J. Brvden, 59 not out; B team, T. Thompson 70 not out; and O team, T. Pedlow, 65 not out. The Maclean cup for the best batting average in ,th© club, and accompanying gold medal, has been won this year by V. C. Hardie, with an average of 30.3. The club was again unfortunate in losing two good senior players in B. Cramond, who has gone to Invercargill, and R. C. Torrance; whilst in om- junior ranks many old players joined the League game last year. Regret is expressed at the death of two of the club’s vice-pre-sidents, Mr Geo. Prain and Mr H. B. Courtis. The thanks of the club are due to donors of trophies, also to the honorary scorer, honorary auditor, and Umpires’ Association. The following members have been or are on active service with the colors:-— W. Fleming, A. Buchan, -W. Buchan W Tweedy, and J. W. Condliffe. The good wishes of their fellow-members are dially extended to them. r '
