MINING.
The Rise and Shine No. 1 dredge worked the usual cut last week, under conditions similar to those of the previous week, with the exception that the river had risen and was carrying some drift into the cut. The manager of the Waitangi Consolidated mine, Thames, reports that in No. 2 level last week work consisted in opening out on the reef towards the hangingwall. Storing in the eastern end between No. 2 and No. 3 cross-cuts was in progress. As soon as the drive is timbered up, the full width of the reef will be taken out to the hanging-wall. A further distance of sft was driven in the intermediate drive east, making a total of 30ft. The ore coming from this drive looked well and showed good minerals. The secretary of the Nokomai Hydraulic Sluicing Company reports that the stripping off the top material of the next paddock was made on Wednesday. At No. 2 the dam was full on Saturday, at No. 3 the elevator was connected up, nozzle lines were in position, and everything was ready to start sinking on Monday morning. Rise and Shine No. 2 made 15ft ahead, There was some improvement for a fe© feet in the centre of the cut, but eo®; bottom continued on the eastern side.
