Hon. _.L Allen pays a Hue tribute to the work of the officers who havo been entrusted with the training of the men for active service, and considers that our system can stand comparison with anything oLowhere. The Minister • also acknowledges with pride the splendid enthusiasm and eagerness of the recruits to become efficient soldiers. This spirit has been immeasurably helpful to the training staff, who find the men anxious to acquire knowledge and to maintain discipline. The organisation of the system lias been excellent, and the Minister accepts the fact that the Fourth and Fifth Reinforcements did not require a. day's training in Egypt as striking proof of an effective system" of training, and the willingness of "the men to become efficient soldiers. Their record at Gallipoli has proved their fighting qualities and valor. The trench warfare undoubtedly necessitates a. modification of the training. Tt may possibly shorten the period of training Tho experience, acquired in training men for warfare will also lead to a change of methods in connection with the Territorial movement.
