UNIVERSITY COUNCIL
The following business, completing the transactions of the Otago University Council, appeared in the stop-press column of some of our.later papers yesterday afternoon : Mr Israel reported that the trustees of the Dunedin Savings Bank had that afternoon decided to make a gift of £750, to be devoted to the cost of erectino- the medical'block in King street.—The announcement of the gift was received with applause. The Chairman of the Professorial Board drew attention to the advisability of instituting an advanced class of economics. —The Chancellor said he thought the time had come when they might consider the question of appointing a chair of history and economics.—lt was deckled to instruct the Finance Committee to reporton the matter to the next meeting of the board. His Honor Mr Justice Chapman asked the council to accept the gift of a microscope, which had been presented bv Dr Hoc-ken- to the Judge's son, the late Lieutenant G. M. Chapman, who was killed in action during the second battle of ipres while attending the wounded. The only condition made was that the microscope should be placed in the Hocken wing, when not in use, on a proper table under cover, and bearing an inscription, ihe gift (which Dr Benham said was valued at £200) was accepted with thanks. DR BATCHELOR'S DEATH. Dr Church moved—"The council record their deepest regret at the death of Dr I. C. Batchelor, for nearly 30 years lecturer on midwifery and diseases of women, and express their sincere sympathy with the bereaved relatives." Dr Church said his acquaintance with the iate Dr Batchelor commenced 26 years ago. He had always looked up to" him as a very fine gentleman and a man who wis always willing to meet one in the right spirit. Dr Batchelor was a most careful teacher; he was one of the first teachers in the Medical School, and thoroughness was his motto. The motion was carried in silence, all standimr.
