Mrs Alfred Evans, of Cashmere Hills, Christchurch, has received word that her son, Corporal John Evans, Ist Canterbury Alounted R girnent (C.Y.C.), has been reported missing since August 28. Corporal Evans was 21 years of age on Sunday, and was educated first at the Cashmere* Hills School, and afterwards at the Boys’ High School. Up to the time of his enlisting he was employed at Alessrs Booth and MacDonald’s foundry, with a view to becoming a marine engineer. He was one of the first to enlist, being one of those who assisted to erect the camp at Addington. He was for three years a member of the C.Y.C. at Christchurch. Private advice has been received that Trooper David Godfrey (Canterbury Alounted Rifles) has died of wounds received at Gallipoli. He was a son of Air H. C. Godfrey, of Fendalton, was 22 years of age, and was educated at Christ’s College. He was a member of the C.Y.0., and, with others from the corps, joined the Alain Expeditionary Force. He was in the office of Messrs William Wood and Co. when he enlisted, and was well known in cricket and football circles.

Sergeant George Withers (Canterbury Mounted (Regiment, Main Expeditionary For.ee, wounded) is a son > of Mr D. A. Withers, of Prebbleton. He is a native of Canterbury, and prior to the outbreak of the Boer War he became a member of the C.y.C., and went to South Africa with the Seventh Contingent. For the past few years he had been farming at Tai Tapu. Sergeant Withers secured many prizes at ploughing matches, and was also successful in obtaining prizes for teams of horses shown at agricultural shows. Last Friday Mr Withers received news that Sergeant Withers had been slightly wounded at the Dardanelles, and had disembarked at Malta on August 31. Sergeant Withers had not had the best of luck so far, as 'he was laid up in hospital in Egypt with appendicitis for six months, and apparently had just got into the firing line when he was wou'nded. Cable advice has been received by Mr W. H. Seed, of Petersen’s, Ltd., Christchurch, that his son, Sergeant E. G. Seed, has been invalided home. Sergeant Seed left with the Main Expeditionary body, and was a’tached to the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. In May last he was wounded, and made good progress, word being received that he was fit to resume duty. Prior to leaving again for the front he' was taken ill with dysentery and enteric fever, and word was received by the last mail that he had been in the hospital in Cairo for several weeks, but wait now convalescent. >

Corporal Everard P. Gray (Otago Battalion, wounded) is a son of Mr John Gray, of Moorhmise avenue, Christchurch. When war broke out he was residing at Invercargill, and immediately enlisted. Corporal Gray took a keen interest in football and rowing, and was a member of the Invercargill Railway Rowing Club. His brother, Sergeant G. F. Gray, is on the Headquarters Staff at Trentham. Trooper William A. Pope (Canterbury Mounted, wounded) was educated at Wyndham, where his people resided for some time. Trooper Gerard T. Williams (Wellington Mounted Rifles, died of typhoid) was a ■brother of Dr J. W. Williams, of Gisborne. He was sheep farming at Tuparoa, and left Gisborne with the Third Reinforcements. Private J. M'Gafiin, who is reported in the Australian casualty lists as missing, is a son of Mr J. M‘Gaffin, of Kaiapoi. He was born at Kaiapoi 31 years ago, and was educated at the local' school. For three years he was in the Police Force in Christchurch, and then he went to Australia to take up farming. Private M’Gafiin 1 ft *’ ■■• with the 2nd Australian Reinforcement#. Private Victor Levien, reported missing, and now reported “ belie.ed to have been killed.” went with the main body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He I was about 22 years of age, and was the | third son of Air J. T. Levien, Ohingaiti, ' and lately of Havelock. He was a brother of Airs E. H. Smith, Havelock, and a nephew of Mrs W. Lock, Nelson. He was a member of the ‘ Pelorus Guardian ’ staff for about 12 months. Private Brian Ronaidson (killed) was the third son of; Air T. S. Ronaldson, Deputy Public Trustee, Wellington, and a grandson of the late Mr D. AI. Luckie, Assistant Commissioner of the Government Life Insurance Department. Deceased was at one' time prominent in athletic and boxing circles in Wellington, and_ left New Zealand with the Alain Expeditionary Force. Another brother is with the forces at the front. Deceased, who was about 20 years of age, was educated at' Te Aro School and Wellington,

College, and just before be enlisted was on-,-Mr. MLaron’s station in the Wairarapa. During’the time he was stationed m-Alexandria ho won two medals for boxing. Trooper Albert George Pago (died of wounds) was the second son of Mr and Mrs Fred _ Page, late of Cherteey, ami now of Gisborne.- Trooper Page joined the Wellington Mounted Rifles at Gisborne, and was subsequently transferred ■to the Otago Mounted Rifles. He was born in Chertscy, whore ho resided till about four years ago. He was well known both in Chortsey and Ashburton, and was about 24 years of age. Private A. Gordon (killed) was serving with the Australian forces, having enlisted in Sydney. He was the y-uirecKt son of the late Mrs Gordon, of Bligh’s road. He was horn in Bryndwr, Feudal■ton, and was educated at the Fendalton School. He was a contractor, and latterly a hotelkeeper before he left for Australia about five years ago. Corporal David Manson (died of wounds) was the second son of Mr David Manson, of Craigieburn. He was 24 years of age, arid was educated at the Springfield Public School and the Ashburton High School. He was one of the first to enlist in Christchurch, and loft with the main force as a sapper in No. 1 Field Troop, Now Zealand Engineers, gaining his promotion in Egypt. Prior to enlisting he was in the employ of Messrs Andrews and Beaven, Christchurch. He attended the night (lasses of the School of Engineering at Canterbury College for three years, gaining first class passes in seven subjects. He took his third marine engineer’s certificate in June, 1914. Always a keen Territorial, he was one of the team from No. 1 Company New Zealand Engineers, under Sergeant Jordan, who won the observatory building at the naval and military competitions held in Christchurch in 1912, and was also one of the team of thiee Christchurch engineers taking second place in the demolition competition at the Auckland Exhibition in 1914. He played Rugby football for Canterbury College' in the second grade team, but his chief hobby was engineering. Corporal George Hamilton Olson (killed) was a son of Mr John Olson, of Hampstead, Ashburton. He was born in Ashburton, and was educated at the borough and Hampstead schools. He spent most of his time in Ashburton, but prior to enlisting he was working in Blenheim. Private advice has been received in Auckland concerning Lieutenant Rupert Walter Westmacott, formerly on the staff of the New Zealand Insurance Company in Auckland. He enlisted with the 3rd (Auckland) Company of the Auckland Battalion, and left with the rank of lancecorporal, later winning promotion until he received a commission as a lieutenant. He was wounded early in the fighting, and invalided to England. It is now learned that he has had a leg amputated above the knee. Lieutenant Westmacott was a young Englishman, his parents living in Cornwall. Mr E. N. Webb, who went to the Antarctic on Dr Mawson’s scientific staff, is about to leave for the front, his work on the Antarctic records having kept him in Christchurch until now as a matter of duty. Advice has been received that Lieutenant H. E. Kev has so far recovered from bis wounds as to be fit for duty at the base.
