UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Otago University Council was attended this afternoon by the Chancellor (the Rev. A- Cameron), Drs Church, Benham, and Malcolm, the Rev. Professor Hewitson, Mr John. Roberts, 0.M.G., Messrs J. 11. Walker. G.' 0. Israel. ■ W. Eudey, John Ross, and W, J. Morrell.

The Finance Committee reported that tho bank balance as per pass hook stood at £5,495 15s lOd, the true balance, after allowing for cheques not presented, being £3,608 13s lOd. The Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company had written forwarding a statement in regard to the Hocken memorial fund, and forwarding a cheque for £3B Is lOd, half-year’s income. —Adopted. The Works Committee reported that it had been decided that Mr P. fi. Shejfherd be asked to carry out repairs to the electric light installation in the Mining School, at an estimated cost of between £4O and £SO. Mr Ansoombo had been instructed to obtain prices for laying two tennis, courts.—Adopted. The Libraiy Committee reported that they considered the matter of purchasing books for the libraiy from the grant of the Senate of £472. Requisitions were received from the various professors and lecturers, but it _ was found that the sum of these requisitions considerably exceeded the amount available. The following resolutions were therefore carried : — l ’ In view of the fact that the total cost of urgent lists submitted considerably exceeds the sum available, members of the staff be asked to revise the urgent lists, with a view of cutting down the total cost by 10 to 15 per cent;., if possible.” “That the list of less urgent books be held over foxconsideration at a later date.” “That tile revised list of books be returned in a fortnight.'’ The question of binding a number of journals and other volumes was considered, and it was resolved to recommend that 98 volumes be bound, as marked on a list-submitted by the librarian, the cost of such binding not to be a charge against the (Senate’s grant.— Adopted.

Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., telegraphed that the Minister could not yet give a definite reply in reference to the additional £2,000 grant for the equipment of the medical extension.—Received.

The Dean of the Medical Faculty recommended that a special class examination be given to medical students who have failed to pass the ordinary class examinations, the feo of £1 Is to bo charged to students taking advantage of this arrangement. —The question of foes involved was referred to the Medical Committee.
