ENGINEER'S REPORT.

Dredge 222.—During the month of x\ugust dredge 222 dredged a total of 42,483 cubic yards of material from the following localities -.—Kitchener street wharf, 4,998 cubic yards; piles 6 and 7, 19,159 cubic yards; piles 15 and 16, 18,326 cubic yards-. Of this material 6,664 cubic yards were deposited at the Kaik, and the remainder, 35,819 cubic yards, at the dtedge Vulcan. During the month the dredge steamed 601£ miles, and burnt 196 tons of coal. The dredge started double shift again on the 9th August. Dredge Vulcan.—During the month of August the Vulcan pumped 55,819 cubic yards of material received from dredge 222 on to the reclamation area in the vicinity of the boat harbor. Between August 1 and 9 the dredge was closed down. Port Chalmers Docks.—During the month of August otle vessel was docked in the Otago dock and four in the Port Chalmers dock) the vessels occupying the docks for a total of 262| hours. While the docks were occupied by the various vessels the drainage was dealt with bv the drainage pumps. Electric , power plant -. The electric plant ran for 27£ hours generating power for the electric crane, which was engaged afc various lifts for that time during .the month. During the, month general repairs and overhaul” ing of machinery and boilers were attended to, and at present the pumping and electric plants, sheer-legs, arid electric crane are in good order and repair. Various .Works, —South endowment; For a period of four weeks ended Bth September, 1915, 6,696 cubic yards of stone were deposited on the wall, making a total of 157,095 cubic yards to that date. Twenty-four cubic yards of stone were also punted to the Victoria wharf breastwork, making a total of 2,064 cubic yards to date. Discharge cbnduit to Tahutla Park.; For the period ended Bth September, 1915, 180 cover slabs have been Completed, making a total of $0 slabs completed to date. Leith canal works; For a period of three weeks ended Bth September, 1916, the portion of, the canal through the reclaimed land has been excavated for a length of 156 ft. making a total Of 316 ft to that date. On the south side 64 tie rods, and on the north,side 105 tie rods, have been placed in position and covered with concrete,' hialciilg a total of 205 tie tods to date, covering a combined distance of, 1,640 ft of canal. All beacons in the Lower Harbor llaVe beta repainted atid Impaired, and .extra ladders fitted for the convenience of the lightkeeper.

HARBOR, MASTER'S REPORT. The mitiiinlnrt low-whter depth at the entrance of the harbor, etc., is as follows- • —North channel, 40ft; bend, 30ft; De-boi-ah Bay, 24ft; Victoria, channel— centre 19ft, sides 18ft.

SHIPPING RETURNS, AUGUST, 1915. Arrivals: 53 vessels, 66,976 tons. Departures •53 Vessels, 74;963 tohs.
