OTAGO HUNT CLUB RACES

[By Old Identity.] The attendance at the Otago HuBI Club's rates at the Wingatui Course on Saturday scarcely reached expectations, and the sum taken in the totalisators (£7,780) was i.ot as large as had -been hoped for; but- the meeting was in a sense an experiment—there was no recent history on which to build calculations—and when all the circumstances are considered, specially the dislocation of things social by the war, also the want of knowledge even oh the part of owners as to what thehorses could do after the winter rest itmust be admitted that the support of th« public was fairly solid. Sports of the enthusiastic type turned out,, at any rate, and all who were- present enjoyed a. pleasant afternoon, thanks to the- good management of the stewards under Mr B. S. Irwin (president) and the efficiency ot the executive arrangements as planned and carried out by Mr A. M. Shuga-r (hon secretary). Mr Hugh Gouiiey was the handicapper and concerning his work it may suffice to state that the dividends on the'first horses averaged over £6. Mr W. F. Dunne was tJie starter, Mr T. Leedam the clerk of course, Mr C. R. Cafftn the clerk of scales -Messrs J. M. Sliao and T. M. Sounds the timekeepers, and Mr S. S. Mvers the judge, all_acting without fees. The Citizens' Band supplied the music. 'he going on the racecourse proper Was a bit hard for want of rain, but the earth on "the inside," where the jumping races e\\Tß run, was reasonably easy on the horses.

Red Pennon and Palladium made pace in the Hunters' Hurdles. Traditor closed on them after a mile. Den Rubvl got near at the Loot of the strai-ht, arid then The Jew ,-ame with a rattle" Pal'adius fell at the last fence, where Traditor had charge. Red Pennon had nothing kit for the finish, and Traditor beat him a length and a-half. Recharge half a. length behind Red Pennon, The Jew fourth, and Don Rubyl fifth. Mr J. Rvan, owner of Recharge, protested, alleging that both Trodit-or and. Red Pennon had gone inside a trestle. The Judicial Committee found that Red Pennon had done so—East on manfully admitted tho fact—so the result was to confirm Traditor's win and place R'.-chaige second. The piacinu of Don Rubyl third was a- mistake, for The Jew finished fourth. Palsom fell at the first race in the Dardanelles Steeplechase. Silver Dirk showed in front of St. Aron, then the latter took the lead. Lady Bent-ley fell at the foot of the straight, and Weliwood and Gobi kd over the double. Gobi raced to the head of affairs, leading Weliwood and Canuie Hughie. Silver Dirk lost his rider between the jumps half p.- mile from home. Gobi and Csimie Hughie fell at the last fence, and Wellwood galloped in alone. ,St Aron was then lying second, but Golden Butterfly spurted past him for second money, and Slow Mes's rush put her in third'place, St. Aroh and Dr Jim next. Arthur George made the pace in the Jellicn-s Handicap, The Robber (who bolted once round in the preliminary) lying second for two and a-half furlongs, when Firegcd supplanted him. Arthur George seemed to be a sure winner. Then they turned for home, but- he tired badly, and Take Down won by nearly two lengths, Arthur George second, Firegod third, then the hot "favorite, Wingform, and Qui/.. " . / Only three started for the Belgian Steeplechase. Royal Medal showed "the way to Milo, Fritz following, and tin? order was -unchanged throughout. Royal Medal winning by three lengths. Fritz 1C lengths further away. So far the results appeared in our Saturday's isnue, and the following completes the renort:— KITCHENER HANDICAP. SOfqvs • second lOsovs, third ssovs. 1m.,, I—Mr L. C.
