DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS.

Fifth Day.—Monday. Both judges were at work this morning. Mr Paihe, the elocution judge, disposed outright of the reading at sight contest for amateurs. The conditions provided for a selection in prose and one in poetry. The prose piece was Edmund Burke's ' Marie Antoinette'; the poem, Marie Gorelli's ' England.' Nino competed, and first prize went to Miss. Alice Austen with 79 points, Miss May Coulter second with 78, and Miss Irene Aslin tliird with 73. Other competitors: Mr Reginald Dav 72, Miss D. Naumaim 72, Mr G. T. MTlrov 70, Mr G, P. Mitchell 70, and Mr C. W". Daucumb 68. Mr Maclean, the music judge, heard the sight-reading of candidates under 13 years of age, and gave them an extract from Czerny to play. Myra M'Kinlay won with 61 points, and Marie R. Himmell was second with 58. Other competitors■: Ethel AV. Geddes 54, Edith Clark 52, Gladys Benton 48, Masie Woods 28, Alice Church 24, and Audrey Eagar 20. One child played ; n the wrong octave. In the piano solo, Debussy's 'Second Arabesque in G,' the recalls are" Miss Myxa Haugh, Miss A. Manscll, and Mr Alfred Geddes. The recalls in the piano duet, 14 and under 16, are: Evelyn Duke and Lena, Geddes, Monica Christie and Dorothy MTntyre, Ruby L. Hudson and Ada P. Mathieson. TO-NIGHT'S PROGRAMME. The impromptu speech competition, for which there are eight competitors, should provide plenty of amusement. The programme also includes piano duet, the soprano solo, a piano solo, the humorous recitation for gentlemen, and the vocal solo and accompaniment for gentlemen. At to-morrow's day sessions some interesting competitions will be heard. In the morning the Shakesperean recitation for gentlemen and the Shakespearean dialogue will be amongst the items heard. To-morrow afternoons programme should prove attractive, including the recitation for girls, tie sacred bass solo, and the champion vocal solo for ladies.
