MORNINGTON COUNCIL

The regular meeting of the Mornington Borough Council was held last night; present—the Mayor (Mr Sincock) and Crs Birt, Gardiner, Mercer, M'Leod, Dalton, Thomson, Patton, Robertson, and Nicol. —Mr Lewis Resigns.— Mr T. Lew.is wrote resigning as town clerk, he having been appointed to a similar position at Waimate.—The resignation was received with regret, and it was resolved that Mr Lewis be granted a bonus of £ls as a mark of the esteem and appreciation of the council of the manner in which he has conducted the affairs of the borough. , Mr Nelson was appointed acting town clerk, and it was decided to ask tno City tram manager to send a revenue clerk to take over the bag business, and thus assist Mr Nelson.' —Amalgamation.— The Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs wrote, under date 24th August, acknowledging receipt of the petition for the union of the borough with the City, and in reply stated that before any further action can be taken it will be "necessary for the City Council to present a petition praying for such union. Mr Lewin wrote stating that the preliminary arrangement arrived at in the conference as to amalgamation had been approved by the City Council—viz., that Ist January next would be a suitable date from which the union should take effect, and that with a view to obviating the necessity of the whole of the members of the' borough becoming members of the City Council until the next biennial election in April, 1917, the area be represented by three members to be selected by the Mornington Council. _ It was resolved, three members dissenting, to discuss this subject in committee. It was resolved to call for tenders for new rope for the tramway, tenders to close in November. —M'Dcmald's Subdivision. In July of 1912 Mr J. M'Donald made proposals to the Mornington Council to dedicate a road through his subdivision on certain conditions. Mi- M'Donald has carried out his and now served notice of a writ On this council to cany out- • their part. The opinion of Messrs Mondy and Stephens was read as to the liability of the council under the correspondence with Mr John M'Donald, and it was resolved that the Works Committee wait on the Works Committee and the engineer of the City Council and look into the matter on the I spot, and see what was best to be done. Messrs Hislop, Lang, and Paterson, act- j ing on behalf of Mr M'Donald, wrote notifying the council that after the expiry of I a month he would sue the Mornington Council for damages for land dedicated, legal expenses, and loss of anticipated profits, such damages having arisen from the failure of the Mornington Council to carry out the contract entered into with Mr M'Donald.—Resolved to reply that the council were negotiating about the road. —Reports.— The Finance Committee recommended that the council appoint a deputation to wait on the Drainage Board in reference to the claim of £6O for rates on the Kaikorai watershed. That the City Council be written to in reference to the water used at a recent fire on the reserve, with the object of getting a rebate on the 6,ooogals.—Adopted. The Trams Committee recommended that the trams manager be authorised to issue what passes he considers expedient ar necessary.—Report adopted. The Works Committee recommended that as several firo plugs had been stolen the matter be placed in the hands of the police; that Mr M Stevenson be. paid 'or two months' work in connection with anitary woTk, at the rate of £250 per annum—namely, £4l 13s 4d; and that tUe present contract for cartage, be extended for six months, to the 31st March, 1916, the contractor to be paid 18s 6d for double teams and 13s 6d for single teams. The committee reported having arranged with the Drainage Board to tip all spare soil from th/* 6ewer in Elgin road into the tip at the end of the Maryiiill line at cost of cartage only, also to do the necessary repairs" to. a. culvert in Elgin road and charge the cost to the council. Provided the Finance Committee authorise the expenditure, the committee are desirous of proceeding with the relaj v ing of the asphalt _ footpath fronting the school in the District road, at an estimated cost of £3s.—Report adopted. ;
