At, 12.45 p.m.. to-day the St. Kil£& Fire Brigade received* a call from the Bowen strett indicator. The cause of the call was a fire in a. washhouse on the promises occupied by Mr Bolton in Royal ■crescent. Willing helpers -were on the eoena promptly, and with the aid of buckets and a garden Ijojo. the fire was extinguished before the brigade arrived, notwithstanding that they were early on the- scene. The building was practica'ly destroyed, as also were two bicycles. 'Jlie City File Brigade "stood by" yesterday while a four-roomed house in King street was destroyed by tiro. The circumstances explaining the brigade's inactivity were that the house was on the ground'on which the new medical block is to be erected, and was in such a filthy condition th;it. so it is .said, no workmen would 'handle it. It had therefore to be burned down, and the brigade were present to see that no damage was done to adjoining property. To-day the brigade had a false 'call to Messrs Ileid and Gray's premises.
