Mr Ernest Wm. White was yesterday admitted as a barrister at Oamaru by Mr Justico Stringer, on the motion of Mr Greagh. Mr C.-J. M'Kenzie, who has succeeded Mr M'Ennis as district engineer of public works in Otago, is at present on a visitto the Central.

On Monday the Hon. G. Jones (go- i vcrning director of the 'Southland News' Company, and proprietor of -the ' Oamaru Mail') and Mrs Jones celebrated their golden wedding. They were married in Christ-church on 13th September, 1365, by the Rev. J. Buller. Wesleyan minister, the. bride being Dorothy, daughter of the late Mr Stephen Tweedy, of Brookside, Canterbury. They havo lived at one time or another in many parts of New Zealand. The late sixties found them in the Far North, where Mr Jones founded the 'Waikato Times' and 'Auckland Echo.' The latter died an early death, but the former still lives. In "conjunction with Mr G. M. Reed, subsequently editor of the Auckland ' Star,' Mr Jones established the ' Evening News' in Dunedin iu 1875, but this paper also did not survive its infancy. The '"Oamaru Mail ' was purchased in 1877, and in the North Otago town the family has lived since 1377. Mr Jones was elected to the House of Representatives for Waitski at" a by-election iu 1880, bub sat only to the end of that Parliament, being compelled to retire through ill-health. lie has been a Legislative Councillor since 1695, and is probably the oldest pressman in New Zealand, having an active service of 57 years. Mr Jones was born at the. Lower Hutt (Wellington) 71 years ago, and Mrs Jones has lived 57 of her 69 years in New Zealand. The family consists of five sons and four daughters: Messrs G. S. Jones (Oamaru). W. J. Jones (Tnvcrcargill), C. F. A. Jones (Invercargill), Fred Jones (Oamaru), and Frank Jones (Oamaru), Miss Dora Jones (Oamaru), Mrs F. W. Dawson (Auckland), Mrs A. C. Gifford j (Wellington), and Mrs J. M. Bulleid (Oamaru). Mr and Mrs Jones have enjoyed robust health for many years. .Mr T. G. Lewis, who came from Invercargill six months ago to be town clerk at Mornington, has been appointed town clerk at Wairpnte. His letter of resignation came before the Mornington' Council last night, when members expressed regret that amalgamation had necessitated his finding employment elsewhere. The council decided to relievo Mr Lewis of his duties at once, and voted him £ls as a bonus in testimony of I satisfaction with and appreciation of Lis work. Mr P. Nelson was appointed acting town clerk. At the conclusion of j the council meeting a social was given to Mr Lewis in the Council Chambers, a number of residents of the borough i assembling to bid him farewell. Speeches were made by the Mayor (Mr E. Sincock), Messrs W. Gow, W. Davidson, E. E. Stevenson, P. Carolin, and several of the councillors. Mr G. H. M. M'Clure, Commissioner of Crown Lands in the Southland Land District, has received notice of his promotion to the position of Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor in Wellington, and will leave for the "North in about a, month's time. He. will bo succeeded by Mr H. Haszard, of Westland. The Wairarapa Presbytery yesterday nominated the Rev. S. W. Curries, of Bajclutlia, Moderator of the next General Assembly of the Presbyterian. Church of New Zealand. Mr James Smith, of Greenfield, who was laid up during his- daughter's coronation at the Otago Queen Carnival, is up and about again. Mr S. N. Osborne, of this City, has be*n appointed elocutionary adjudicator at the Gore- Competitions, which take I place early next month. Mr Osborn lias previously judged at Greymouth, Napier, Invercargill, and other festivals. A Brisbane cable states that Dr Sharp, Bishop of. New Guinea, -,vas thrown from his horse-- and sustained concussion of the brain. He is in a hospital and is progressing. The death is reported from Sydney of Mr W. C. Clancy, a well-known horse owner.
