" The Russians in the Tarhopol district, under a hurricane of artillery fire, made progress, took prisoners, and "repelled the Germans, who are retiring northwards. "Generally speaking, the AustroGermans' efforts are directed towards maintaining the appearance of an offen«ive, but the losses are altogether disproportionate to the results." ALONG THE SERETH. AMSTERDAM, September 13. An Austrian communique savs: The Russian attacks'on the East Galician front continue strong. The hostile forces in tho Sereth district have been repulsed. Fighting at several points developed into hand-to-hand combats. The Russian attacks north-west of Strusow broke down under our cross-fire, and others were repulsed with the bayonet. The Austro-Gennans near Tarnopol took up at night time a position .prepared east of KohnowWezierna. which joins our front on the east bank of the Middle Strypa. This movement was not hindered by the enemy. We reached the railway 'eastward of Dubno, and captured 1,000 prisoners at Szetray, Szuraty, and Lithynia. RICA READY. AX EMPTY HUSK. LONDON, September 14. ' 'The Times's' Petrogmd correspondent says if tho Germans enter Riga they will find an even emptier shell than at Warsaw. The city has been completely stripped of enemy comforts and requirements. Even'the inscription plates on statues and tho cathedrals' huge bells have been removed. WESTERN FRONT. AISNE-OISE ANGLE. FRENCH AIRMEN BUSY. PARIS, September 14. A communique states: Our artillery »orth of the O'ise destructivelv fired upon fences and works at Beauvraigncs, and violently bombarded the trenches, batteries, and camps at Sapigneul and Berry-au-Bae districts. As reprisals for the air raids on Luneville and Compiegne 19 aeroplanes dropped 100 bombs on Treves, clearly hitting the station and the Reichs Bank. They then dropped 58 on the stations at Dominary and Barancourt. Others at a low altitude bombed Donau, Eschingen, and Malbsh and noticed the effectiveness of their fire on their objectives.
