Powell, and Stevenson. —Correspondence.—' From the Controller of Customs .■"acknowledging receipt of the council's representations to duty on kerosene and petrol, and the same were beinr; considered by the Minister.—Received." From tho Hon. R. W. Russell stating that notices wero being prepared to call tor objections, if anv, to the proposed inclusion of Carey- Bay with the borough of Port Chalmers.—Received. From the Fire Brigade, asking for repairs and improvements to the brigade plant, and improved lighting for the fire station.—Works Committee to report. —Reports.— The Works Committee reported: The streets and channels have received the usual attention during the past fortnight; grass has beer: cleaned from the footpaths in Wickliffe terrace. Bernicia, Grey, and I Scoti a- streets; rotton rock 'quarried in Victory place for Grev street; eome rotton rock spread on 'the. footpath in Laing etreet. and the footpaths repaired in Ajax road, Burns street. Belle Vu» place. Constitution CV.rrie, Grey. Scotia, and Magnetic streets. The flagstones for the partitions for- llie new urinal at the square have, been dressed and cut to size ready for erection. The extra weetriclight- -.nttborised for the quarry at the back of the Presbvterian Church" has been erected and lighted. Re the petition -for an extra light in Marv street.' vour committee recommend that the light at the > junetior. of Mary street and Magnetic I streei- 1-e shifted 'across the road to the j top of Mary street above the steps. This j will give the necessary light to that part j of th? .street.—.Adopted with the exception cf the final clause, which was referred back, as the committee were considering the practicability of raising the present lamp. The Finance Committee reported: The water officer has sold 3.007 tons oi water for the month of August, for a revenue, of £225 10s. Water services have been repaired in Island ten-ace. Bernicia street, Grey street, Meridian street, and the Post Office. The old wat<=r main in Wickliffe terrace lias been lifted to the railway crossing at Mussel Bay. The forester reports that the work ' foi the past fortnight has been cleaning up near the reservoir intake, digging in the nursery, and cutting grass and digging holes on. Wickliffe terrace in readiness for planting shrubs. A short fence ha« been put tip on the cemetery reserve near the sexton's hcrse to enable some tree planting to be dnne. This encloses a portion of the hillside near the Scott Memorial, which will be greatly improved by planting. Accounts amounting to £135 9s 2d passed foi "aynient; the receipts (i;l----clr.ding £3OO lodged on deposit with the corporation) totalled £486 12s 4d. A total sum of £1,050 had been lodged on deposit, with the corporation ; outstanding water accounts amounted to £709. Adopted. —General.— Cr Powell reported that the weighbridge was out of order, and as it was optional whether the corporation maintained a weighing machine the matter might very well remain in abeyance at present.—Suggestion agreed to. Cr Isliistev said that access should be provided between Mansford Town and the upper road. ( Cr M'Lachlan complimented the Finance Committee, on the planting of trees on the reserve^ below the Scott Memorial cairn. Cr Stevenson said the Finance Committee had visited the water reserves and found everything in splendid order. He suggested that all the council visit the. reserves in question and see what a fine, asset they had there. Cr Fail suggested that the old cemeterv fejice bo repaired, and he was informed the matter was in hand. Cr Anderson drew attention to the desirability of extending the concrete kerbing and channelling in order to j improve the street::. Several other matters weve discussed.
