WOOL SALES. SYDNEY SERIES OPENS. SYDNEY, September 13. The new season's wool sales opened today, when competition was somewhatlanguid. A feature of the sales was the purchasing on behalf of Japan, Italy, and the United States. All good classes maintained, the levels of the closing sales last season, but faulty and burry lots were still neglected. JBUTTER AND CHEESE. Messrs A. S. Paterson and Co. have received the following cable from J. and J. Lonsdale and Co., London :—" Butter : Market- firm; Danish higher, finest especially: unsalted scarce. Cheeso : Firmer, 75s to 765. The future depends on the Government." SCARCITY OF MEAT. HIGH PRICES ON WEST COAST. At the fortnightly sale of stock at Arahura (West Coast) yesterday. Messrs Sprot, Jeffries, and Co. obtained record prices for beef. One bullock realised £23 ss, and a heifer £lB. The whole of the entry of prime beef realised the high average of £2 10s per 1001b. In some instances this figure was exceeded. The scarcity of stock was brought home to residents last night, when "in the local shops there was no meat to be obtained. The, entry for the sale consisted of 115 head. No sheep were submitted. The West Coast butchers were well represented at the sale. SOUTHERN STARR-BOWKETT SOCIETY. A meeting of members of the Southern Starr-Bowkett Society was held last evening, Mr S. S. Myers presiding over a small attendance. * The seventy-seventh appropriation of £SOO by ballot in group No. 2 resulted in cluster No. 12 being drawn, the shares being held by three members. The seventy-eighth appropriation of £SOO by sale "in the earn© group was disposed of at the following premiums -.—£300 at £l6 per £IOO/ and £2OO at £ls tier £IOO.
