" ■* " On the eastern front fighting developed betweeu Dwisia and Mereoz on a "greater scale than hitherto. Von ■H-iudenburg captured 1.800 men. There was obstinate fighting .between Jesiori and the .Nie'me'n, which lasted all day and all night. The Russians ceased their resistance at daybreak, and pursuit is proceeding. We broke the enemy's lines at several points on the Zelwianka, capturing 1,950 men. We attacked and repulsed a Russian guard regiment north-west of Vilna. Prince: Leopold is closely co-operating with Von'Mackenscn's-right wing and captured positions, east of Zelwa. We crossed the- Zelwianka near Kozele, capturing 2,750 men. Von Mackensen is continuing his progress, and surprised and' captured some advanced positions. We repulsed with heavy Joss further attacks in the south-eastern theatre. • . PETROGRAD, September 12. Flotillas of German barges are ceaselessly bringiug shells up the Niemen to Kovno, whence they are taken by motor lorries to the front. A number of Germans taken prisoner at Novitrok succumbed to German asphyxiating shells. There is indignation in Russia at postcards showing Cossacks harnessed to German ploughs.
