QUEEN CARNIVAL RAFFLES

.A large number of the public went to the Garrison Hall on Saturday afternoon to _ see the drawing of the combined art ■union that each queen profited by. The method of drawing was 6tated in Saturday's issue, alao the fact that public accountants managed the drawing. The final ballots were presided over by the Mayor of the City (Mr J. J. Clark), the Mayor of Balclutha (Mr D. Stewart), and the • Mayor of Mosgiel (Mr A. P. Quelch). The very last draw was from two boxes each containing. .-20 - Two--ladies who : -went to see the drawing were invited on to the stage. One drew a marble and handed it to t3ie Mayor, and the other lady pulled a marble and handed it to Mr ■ _ . W. E. C. Reid, who gang out the number pf the ticket, whilst Mr J. G. Tho Mayor explained that in the above lottery 200,000 tickets had been issued and 133,930 had Been disposed of. He stated later, when the' Country Queen Executive were declared the winners of the first prize, that the executive had intimated their intention, when they took the tickets, of handing back whatever they won to assist the wounded soldiers' fund. The Soldiers' Queen and Sports Queen Executives at Balclutha would be almost certain to follow th© same course. He was informed by the Mayor of Balclutha that the people of that district had purchased £1,500 worth of tickets in this art union, with tho intention of handing back anything they might win to the wounded soldiers' fund. , ' The art union promoted by the Queen "of the Allies, in which the prize* was a house and section at St. Clair, valued at £1,200, for which 29,679 tickets were sold, was then drawn,, the winning number being 62,275, held by D. Rankin, inspector of machinery, Napier. The third art union, also promoted by the Queen of the Allies, the prize in which consisted of a seaside, cottage at Hinkley's Bay, valued at about £2OO, which attracted 14,000 investors, was finally drawn, the lucky number being 8,052, G. Lord, care of Shaddock. Ltd.. Dunedin.
