HOPES OF JEWRY

"IN THE LAND OF THEIR FATHERS." In the course of an address at Auckland last week in connection with the opening of the Jewish New Year, " Jewry," said P.abbi Goldstein, "is passing through the most serious stags of many ages. Our brothers are acquitting themselves valorously on every battlefield. They are shattering for ever the vile myth that the Jew » a coward and knows not how to fight. Uur co-religionists are proving themselves in every country, displaying chivalry and bravery, and cheerf u'ly giving their lives to the cause of freedom. . What has the anti-Semite to say now? We hope that as the outcome of this war and our part in h\ direct benefits will accruo to our race. Just as Belgium and other 6mall countries fight for self-government and existence, so the Jews fight, hoping to win for themselves at last a home of their own in Palestine. We may not all wish to go there, but there are millions of our people longing foT the day when they may leave everything and make their homes'in the land of their fathers. We pray fervently that peace will inaugurate a new attitude towards Jewry throughout the whole world. Let us pray for leaders who will guide us in this great thought. Other nations cry out for justice; let us hope that the time has arrived when justice will be meted out to the Jews. Let us nope, also, that the Jews will be given a place under the am, the place where the heroes of the Scriptures lived and worked. It is time that the Jew was regarded as something more than a money-maker. In this great war he is proving himself such. Let us pray for the consummation of our hopes."
