CITY POLICE COURT. (Before, J. E. Bartholomew, Esq., S.M.) Drunkenness.—A first offender was re. •.itanded for a week for medical treatment. —Two other first offenders and Daniel Scanlon wore each fined 10s or 24 hours.— John Pureell was fined 5s or 24 hours.— William Hoares was charged with drunkenness and .also with casting offensive matter. He was fined 5s or 24 hours on the first charffe, arid 15s or 48 hours on the second.—A first offarder, who had had to pay one guinea medical expenses, was convicted and discharged. Opium Smugglers.— Lew.. Chin was charged with being found in the possession of eight tins of opium in a form suitable for smoking. Low Ghye was charged with having seven tins, and Leong Fat with having three, tins in their possession. Fat was also charged with committing mischief by damaging a pair of trousers, valued at 30s, tha property of Andrew Simpson. They all pleaded guilty.—The Collector of Customs (Mr Cullen/ said that the accused were members of the crew of the steamer Norman Monarch, at present at Dunedin. At about 8.30 on Saturday evening Mr Simpson, a Customs officer, saw Lew Chin leave the vessel. He followed him along the wharf, and on searching him found eight tins of opium secreted in his clothing. Accused tried to bribe the officer by giving him a £1 note, and afterwards 20s tin silver. Low Chye then came along the wharf, and he also had opium in his possession. The men were then arrested. At about half-past 10 the save, evening Leong Fat left the boat and out across the reclaimed land. He was followed, and was found to have opium on him. Accused became very violent, and caught hold of the officer by s the throat and kicked him on the legs. His tiousere were torn in the struggle, and some of the officers of the ship had to come to his assistance.—His Worship fined Leong Fat £4O, with costs (12s), on the major charge, or three months' imprisonment, and ordered him to make good the damage done (30s), or 'two weeks' imprisonment. The other two defendants were each fined £25 and costs (12s), or two months' imprisonment. By-law Cases.—Michael Henry Nyhon, charged with driving cattle through Caversham during prohibited hours, was fined 10s and ccsts (7s). —William- Alexander Gordon was similarly dealt with for riding a motor cycle without a light.—George Edgar H. Garden was charged with riding a motor cycle on the wrong side of the street, and also with riding at a speed exceeding sis miles an hour. He was fined 10s and costs (7s) on the first charge, and 2Cs and costs (13s) on the second.—Andrew ] Stewart was charged with driving a motor car at a speed greater than four miles an hour whilst turning a corner. The case was dismissed. Fined.—John Doulen and Bartholomew Daly, for whom Mr Scurr appeared, pleaded guilty to casting offensive matter in Bond street, and were each fined 20s and costs (7s) or seven days' imprisonment. Prohibited.—Frederick George Cox, a prohibited person, for whom Mr Irwin appeared, was changed with being found on licensed premises, and. was fined 10a and costs (7s) or 48 hours.. Obscene language.—James Mort was charged with drunkenness and also with using obscene language.—The Sub-inspec-tor said that accused/ was in a drunken condition on Saturday, and used the language to a companion.—He was fined Ss or 24 hours on the first charge, and £5 or one month on tho second. Herbert Smith, a young man, was charged with using obscene language in Princes street on Saturday night. Mr Irwin appeared for accused.—The Sub-inspector said that the language was used two or three times to a companion. There were not many people about at the time.—Accused was fined £2 or two weeks' imprisonment. Eric Ward was charged with drunkenness, with using obscene language, and also with committing mischief by damaging a police helmet valued at 12s.—Accused was remanded for a woek in order that he could be represented by Mr Hanlon. Bail was allowed on the second charge, accused in his own recognisance of £SO, and two. sureties, £25 each.— William Prentice was charged' on two informations of using obscene language.— The Sub-inspector said that Mr Hanlon had been retained for the defence, and had asked him to agree to an adjournment for a week. The man's wife, [ Blanche Prentice, was charged with using indecent language. He (the sub-inspector) had no objection to the adjournment in all the cases.—Adjourned accordingly. Maitenance.—John James Stubley was charged with disobeying a maintenance order. He applied for a variation of the order.—This application was dismissed, and the caso against him was adjourned for a month. Defence Cases.—For tailing to attend the annual training camp under the Defence Act James Cain was fined 20s and costs, and John Roberts was convicted and discharged. A Serious Charge.—John Daniel Black was charged with, on the 4th inst., at Anderson Bay, he did attempt to commit a serious offence.—Mr Lemon said that Mr Hanlon had been retained for the defence, and as ho would not return until Wednesday, he (Mr Lemon) asked for a remand.—Chief-detective Bishop said that accused had already been remanded twice. All the witnesses were in attendance, "and if the case stood over he asked Worship to hear the evidence of the I girl's mother before granting a remand.— Mr Lemon agreed to this, and after the witness's evidence had been taken accused was remanded for a week. Bail was asain refused.
