A CALL OF PRAYER FOR THE WAR.

TO THE EDITOR. J Sir,—The spiritual forces engaged in the war, and the urgent need of prayer to [combat them, are emphasised by Dr ' Meyer, who writes a public appeal to the Nonconformist Churches. "I am increasingly oon.vin.ced," he. says, "that Britain and her Allies aire fighting not only against flesh and blood, but against the wicked spirits that rule the darkness of this world. Nothing else can account for the extraordinary passion and' inhumanity which, like a. paroxysm, seems to possess the German nation. Rev. 12, 12, is being literally fulfilled before our eyes ( 'Woe to the inhabiters of the earth* and of sea-, for the Devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.'). Under these circumstances, we must resort to the prayer that binds the strong man, of whom our Lord speaks in Matt, xviii., 18, not for patriotic reasons alone, but for the sake of suffering humanity and of ' the kingdom.' I would, therefore urge that little groups of believers should assemble daily or weekly, throughout ■ the country, to engage in this definite conflict, praying with all prayer and supplication that G-od would turn all thes evil devices to foolishness, and overthrow the power of Satan. Let us plead our Lord's eternal victory and power." Dr Fitchett, editor of the ' Southern Cross,' asks, and I commend his question to the consideration of your readers: "Why cannot the heads' of at least the Protestant Churches in Australia organise a common League of Prayer, with meetings for prayer in ever}- town and village? The outside world mav well begin to think that Christ's Church has ceased to believe in the efficacy of prayer, or has lost the secret of prevailing prayer, when, in a time of National peril like this, it joins in no united fellowship of prayer." —I am, etc.j G.JJB.
