DRAUGHTS NOTES

[By S.D.C.] ■ —Meetings.— To-night.—Anderson Bay* Club,' in ' Druids’ Hall; St. Hilda, in South' , Dunedm Fire Brigade Social' Hall, Glasgow street. ■ Saturday and Wednesday Otago Club, in Y.M.G.A. Rooms, - . The tournament of fbe Bay Club is being pushed on with despatch. It is too soon yet to attempt to pick the winner. In contests of this sort surprises are numerous, and in the one under notice this feature has not been lacking. The handicaps are being anxiously looked for, and the handicapper has anything but an easy task to perform. In this chib are several young players. In order to encourage them in their pursuit of the pastime a tournament is being arranged. Good prizes have been proffered and accepted. There will in all probability be six entrants, and the play will be on the all-round system. Enthusiasm is being displayed by the members of the Otago Club in ‘their various competitions.’ In the first round' the work of the handicapper was such that in the first section there were only 3J points between the first and last, the handicaps ranging from Ito 6 points in 12 games. In the other sections a matter of 21 points represented the difference between the highest and lowest scores in each ’section. Ten games were played in each case. In the various competitions the latest scores are not to hand. Some really good play is being shown.. The question of whether the annual tournament *of the New Zealand Draughts Association will be held next year is being discussed, but it has not yet been decided. In view of the present unsettled state of affairs, would it not he better to drop it for a year? There are, and will be, so many demands on the purses of players and enthusiasts that the matter should he carefully considered before a final decision is given. The tournament for next year was fixed to be held in Wellington.
