SUGAR AND OILS.
A REASSURING STATEMENT. [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, August 8. In connection with the increase in the price of sugar in Wellington, Mr Wilkinson, member for Egmont, who is a storekeeper in a large way of business, states that the last wholesale change in the price of sugar was before the crisis, when a reduction to £ls per ton took place. The retail price in Wellington is reported in the Press to be £l9 per ton. Taranaki retail prices are, so far as Mr Wilkinson believes, normal. A reassuring statement can also be made regarding the price of benzine and oil. Mr Wilkinson has learned authoritatively that there will be no rise. Nor is there any prospect of a shortage, as there is sufficient in store or close at hand to last' nine months.
